How to Clean a Computer Keyboard

How to Clean a Computer Keyboard

Cleaning a Computer Keyboard is really quite easy and should be done every so often to prevent they keys sticking.

If the keyboard isn't too bad, you can simply disconnect it, turn it upside down, hoover over the keys, and then wipe them over with a damp (but nearly dry) lint free cloth.

If they keyboard is bad, it's still simple, but just slightly more complicated.

Start by disconnecting it, turning it upside down and hoovering it as above. Then get something like your nail, a nail file, or a screw driver, and prise one of the keys off.

It's surprising how many computer users don't know that the keys can be removed, so when the keyboard is too dirty or sticky they just go out and buy a new one. In most cases the individual keys are simply fastened by a plastic lug, and the keys can be carefully removed just by putting something under the key and prising it upwards.

If you are really brave you could remove all the keys, but if you think you may forget the correct order to replace them simply remove them one at a time.

Whichever method you use, once the key is removed hoover under it, and then wipe under it and around the sides and the top of the actual key itself before putting it back. Don't wipe the top of the key too hard or you may wipe the letter off!

Cleaned in this way, a computer keyboard will give you many more years of faithful service. Remember, a keyboard is for life not just for Christmas (at least, the life of the actual computer)

Computer Hardware Security

Computer Security

When we talk about computer security most people think about firewalls and internet security, but it also pays to have some sort of security in place in the event of your computer hardware being stolen.

There are all sorts of commercial programmes you can buy, but there are also programmes that are completely free and, unless your computer contains state or industrial secrets, these would be completely adequate.

An internet search for “send email when computer is stolen” will point you in the direction of may such programmes, but I'll use the ”Locate PC” programme as an example of how most of them work.

You simply run the programme on your computer, and it will ask you for your email address (a web based email address is best for obvious reasons). You then set up a schedule to be sent an email, either once a day or once every time the computer's IP address changes.

What happens if your computer is stole?

As soon as the new 'owner' logs onto the internet, the computer will send you an email containing details of the computer web IP address, local IP address, the MAC address and the trace route. Everything in fact for the police and internet provider to track to computer to the physical address where it's being used.

Of course, it doesn't guarantee that you'll get your computer back any more than an anti-virus software will guarantee that you will never get a virus, but the odds are that you will.

This works on windows and Mac, desktops and laptops.

Home Plug Adapters Not Compatable

Home Plug Adapters

If you are buying some Home Plug Adapters and it's the first time you have bought some, then you are OK, but if you have bought some in the past and you now want to add some more to your existing ones, then you need to be very careful.

Home Plug Adapters are Ethernet bridges that allow you to network your devices over your mains wiring, and they don't need drivers and will work with any operating system including set-top boxes and games consoles so they are becoming very popular.

So why do you need to be careful?

Simply because there are two different types on the market. They are not compatable with one another, and it is not always immediately obvious which type you are buying. Sometimes the packaging just doesn't say!

Of course, if you are buying enough for your whole house in one go, then it doesn't matter which type you get. But if you've bought enough for half your house in the past and you now want to buy some for the rest of the house, that's when you need to take care.

Some Home Plug Adapters use an AV standard, backed by the HomePlug Poweline Alliance.
Other Home Plug Adapters use the Powerline standard, backed by the Universal Powerline Association.

They both work at 200Mbps so there is nothing to choose as far as performance is concerned, but it is easy to get the two 'Powerline' names confused and they are NOT compatable.
